Federal Solar Panel Incentive (STCs)

The Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme remains the primary driver for lowering the upfront cost of solar panels. Under this Federal Government initiative, your system is assigned certificates based on the amount of renewable energy it is projected to generate.

How it works: Each certificate represents a projected tonne of greenhouse gases saved.

What it’s worth: The value of these certificates acts as an instant point-of-sale discount on your quote. Generally, the larger the system you install, the higher the total rebate value. The quantity of STC’s and their value will be clearly identified on your proposal so you can see the total value of the rebate.

Something to note: The incentive reduces year-on-year (each January) as part of a legislated phase-out ending in 2030.

Federal Battery Incentive (Cheaper Home Batteries Program)

This program is designed to make energy independence more affordable by providing a significant point-of-sale discount on household battery storage.

How it works: It uses the Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) framework, but the quantity of STC’s is calculated based on the usable capacity (kWh) of the battery you choose. Larger batteries attract proportionately less STCs, using a tiered structure below:

  • From 0 kWh up to 14 kWh (inclusive): STC Factor applied at 100%.
  • Every kWh greater than 14 and up to 28 kWh (inclusive): STC Factor applied at 60%.
  • Every kWh greater than 28 and up to 50 kWh (inclusive): STC Factor applied at 15%.

What it’s worth: For common residential batteries, this can reduce the total cost by several thousand dollars, making premium storage solutions far more accessible for the average household. Similar to the solar panel incentive, the quantity of Battery STC’s and their value will be clearly identified on your proposal so you can see the total value of the rebate.

Something to note: This incentive reduces every six months (each January and July) and is currently planned to continue through 2030.

This program isn’t just for homeowners. It also supports small businesses and community facilities looking to take control of their energy use and cut down on rising electricity costs. However, with the new tiered rebate structure taking effect in May, right-sizing your battery to your actual needs (rather than simply choosing the biggest option) will become more important than ever.
